Discussion:
PCRE8.DLL: where?
(too old to reply)

Sometimes it's amazing which non-standard eCS software, e.g. 7Z, and
useless Unix-directory structures are (anything but) required to
install an upgrade of a straight-forward app.

It isn't the worst case, but now I've found one which requires
PCRE8.DLL. Where can this one be found? I've found a working copy in
yet another package, but it may be far older than yet another DLL with
exactly the same name. I'ld like to verify that.

I did RTFM, which suggests to download and install all available DLLs
hosted at netlabs.org. Or to install yet another complicated, unneeded
package to avoid having to download and install all available DLLs. I
did RTFM, which also suggests to look for a file called *PCRE* in
http://rpm.netlabs.org/release/00/zip/. Of course there no such file
in that directory.

Google refers to the solution I've found too, but I assume that
WGET*.ZIP isn't the official home of PCRE8.DLL.

PCRE8.DLL
FWIW: I don't want unclear, random versions of common DLLs in my
LIBPATH anyway, so one may as well include small, specific required
DLLs in a distributed package. Deleting those rather small files is
easier than having to find and install yet another version of e.g.
Z.DLL.

In the future it may even be harder to find an old copy of a specific
DLL, because of the way the DLLs are distributed (single source, no
index nor mirrors) now.

I suspect
http://rpm.netlabs.org/release/00/pentium4/i686/pcre-8.12-2.oc00.i686.rpm may
be the current "official home" of PCRE8.DLL - for whatever reason this
package does not seem to have a zip version.

The current rpm release is the same as that found in
http://hobbes.ecomstation.co.kr/mirror/os2/hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/wget-1.14-1-os2.zip
- which is where I found a copy when I first needed it.

Possibly of interest: the eCS Archive Viewer - I am using version 2.1
which I think is supplied with eCS2.1 - can open rpm files. It was
necessary to add rpm to the list of file extensions in the Properties
notebook, Association page in order to open rpm files by doubleclicking
on the rpm file icon.

Same here (originally downloaded in 2013), thanks. Apparently it's
still up-to-date.

It is interesting. It won't work with the old (2001) eCS 1.2-viewer
(version 1.14) indeed.

Why not go to Alex Taylor's site
http://www.altsan.org/programming/os2/index.html and download the
latest v2.2 of his ArchView program.

The read me even gives the details of the external programs and DLLs
needed for almost all packed formats.

Yet another great suggestion, thank you. I'm not going to use it
because it's an English OS compenent and I'm still waiting for a
translated full OS (off-topic: maybe the last 2.x release, maybe not).
A no-unless-policy. I hardly have a need for RAR, e.g. 7Z is not an
eCS "standard" as such, it looks like an older NLV version isn't
distributed and I don't have VX-REXX (nor a NLV diff file) to compile
my own eCS 1.2 update. I also don't know where which required DLLs
will b stored. So this basicly is an open-sourced product for users of
eCS 2.x EN/US. Nevertheless it's good to know that this does exist.
