86.rpm should contain a copy of Z.DLL which is required by recent
software.

Is trhis specific file available for download somewhere, or is it
really required to download am RPM file, download an utility like
7-zip to unpack some CPIO file, and to install a GCC "build
environment" to compile this DLL? Sounds like an Unix-solution I'm not
going to use, but maybe I'm overlooking a more obvious way to obtain
it...

http://rpm.netlabs.org/release/00/zip/zlib-1_2_5-5_oc00.zip, most all
the rpm releases are also released as zips,
