BackAgain/2000 -- where did my data get written?

I've been using BackAgain/2000 Server Edition v. 4.1 for years to do
weekly full backups and nightly differential backups to a Sony DDS4
autoloader.

The weekly backup of one of my drives starts on one tape and should
continue on the next. The log file shows, for example:

07-AUG-11 07:14:05 [id=8500] Auto-compare for volume 1 started.
07-AUG-11 07:42:59 [id=8502] Auto-compare for volume 1 completed.
07-AUG-11 08:53:28 [id=8500] Auto-compare for volume 2 started.
07-AUG-11 10:03:10 [id=8502] Auto-compare for volume 2 completed.

Yet when I try to restore files from this set, it reads the first tape,
ejects it, then starts to read the second tape and reports that the
wrong tape has been loaded. When I check the directory of that second
tape, it is either blank (in the case of a brand new tape) or contains
data from an ancient backup (in the case of a tape that was being reused).

I do recall that when BackAgain/2000 v. 4 or 4.1 was released, it was
found that with a single-tape drive the backup would simply abort if the
tape would not hold the full set; there was no prompt to insert a new
tape. When questioned, CDS replied that this behavior was introduced at
the request of a large customer to guard against data corruption (or
similar wording). I am guessing the customer had in mind the situation
where there was a long delay before inserting the continuation tape, and
the file could have changed significantly during that time. But that did
not seem to apply when the destination device was an autoloader: it just
moved on to the next tape immediately and continued backing up -- or
that is how it seemed.

So where did this "Volume 2" that took over two hours to create and
compare get written?

FTR: ARCsolo for OS/2 Version 1.7 (abandonware, for one it's older
than files larger than 2GB) by Cheyenne Software (abandoncompany,
nowadays CA) should support (most) autoloaders properly, as it was
sold by specialized backup companies. Its SOLO2.INF reads, a..o.:

AutoChanger support has been added for most single drive changers.
This support was not available in the version 1.00 product. See the
AutoChanger section for more detailed information. Basically, the tape
drive window has been extended one level to show all tapes in the
changer. Backup source objects can now be dragged to a specific tape
for the autochanger.

-----

Using an autochanger is similar to using a tape drive. The following
differences apply:

oWhen the Tape Drives icon in the main program window is double
clicked, an autochanger icon is displayed. When the changer icon is
expanded, the embedded tape drive is shown.

oDouble clicking on the autochanger icon displays a new window showing
the embedded tape drive and all the slots and tapes in the
autochanger.

Slots are labelled according to their status and/or contents.

Commonly used tape tools are also provided at the bottom of the tape
window. These tools are a subset of the standard tape drive utilities.
The tools, from left-to-right, are format tape, erase tape, rewind
tape, retension tape, test tape, and check tape status. Dragging one
or more tapes to one of the tape tools performs the appropriate
utility function.

Dropping a backup source object on a specific tape will attempt to
backup the source files onto the requested tape.

ARCsolo provides support for most single drive autochangers. Tape
selection, loading, and unloading is handled automatically by ARCsolo,
and normally does not require user intervention. When ARCsolo performs
any operation on a tape, it makes sure the correct tape is loaded in
the drive first. This includes unloading any previous tape that may
already be in the drive. Of course, manual loading and unloading
functions are also provided.

Tape spanning is also handled automatically by ARCsolo. When one tape
fills up, a continuation tape is automatically loaded by ARCsolo,
continuing program operation without interruption.
